Some of you may know that I'm studying at a fashion school in the country and I just want to share these basic tools you will surely need as you enter basic sewing classes! I had some problems with some as I didn't have a clue what they looked like in the first place and also some of the terms your professor might tell you wouldn't be the term Tabora or Divisoria uses.
- Portable Sewing Machine, I say portable instead of the industrial one just because you will need to bring it to school every class and it might be imposible if you have an industrial one. plus the school will provide that.
I have the Brother Pasteria one and it might not be the finest but it gets the simple jobs done.
2. Fitting Form, The sizes you need might vary from different professors but most likely it will be the small one. You can get the best quality in terms of body sizing from Mannequin Incorporated at 2000Php (with stand)
3. Rulers, these are very important in pattern making and to buy the right ones. I got mine at Tabora in Divisoria at Eversons. You will probably need the Grid Ruler, French Curve, L square and a Curved Stick with the brand "Kearing" It will also costs you around 2000++Php
4. Styling Tape, this is for having a guide on your fitting form. It's actually just 1/8 inch ribbons that you can find at craft stores and has a lot of different colors.
5. Measuring Tape, all of you will probably know what this is.
6. Threads and Needles, buy a cone of the black and white thread because you know you need it A LOT.
7. Scissors, you will also need 2 kinds of scissors, one for fabrics and the other for paper just because you can't mix the 2.
8. Pattern Paper/ Brown Paper, I get mine in rolls and at 4 ft tall so that I would't be buying them all the time. You can buy this at Overseas Paper also near Tabora. It's only for 120Php a roll.
9. Transfer Paper, you will need this to transfer your pattern to the fabric, and it is washable so you wouldn't have to worry it won't come off later.it's about 85Php at Tabora of course!
10. Thread Cutter and Seam Ripper, they are almost alike and you can probably use both with the same purpose if you want. The Seam Ripper is VERY helpful.
Thread Cutter Seam Ripper
11. Tracing Wheel, you will also need this in pattern making and I recommend buying the ones with wooden handles just because the plastic ones break easily.
12. Pins, for keeping fabrics in place. You can buy the ones with heads or without.
13.Zipper footers, in case the Industrial Machines you have in school doesn't have one. You will basically just need regular zipper footers (left and right) also Invisible zipper footers.
14.Markers, these are for your fashion illustration classes. You can choose from Copic Markers (the best ones 250Php each locally), Triad Markers, or the Pro markers (conveniently available at fully booked at 99Php each) Avoid Kure Colors just because they are too bright unless you want your designs to be neon all the time.
I know these may be a lot and also costs a lot of money, but if you really want this course it will all be very helpful for you even in the future! Goodluck! and I hope this helps!
